Learned about Lemmy from Reddit but never heard of kbin until recently. That said, I like the name Lemmy a lot more than the name kbin. kbin sounds like a hex editor for KDE, not a Reddit alternative. I love the open source community, but sometimes the names of projects leave much to be desired. Lemmy isn’t the perfect name but it’s more memorable than kbin.

That’s what I needed to hear today. genius

What a difference, we can talk to each other :F
Rust > PHP
Yes….on a technical level. But the picture is bigger than that. Personally, I have a hunch that the choice of Rust is making Lemmy’s development slower. This seemed to be evidenced by the fact that Kbin has more functionality than Lemmy while having only been around for 2 months. Vs Lemmy’s 4 years. The Kbin dev has also been much more able to fix things on the fly during the surge in users. Whereas Lemmy will supposedly move off websocket use any day now.
Adoptability isn’t something to be discounted. The fact that there any more people out there familiar with PHP may give Kbin an edge over time. And let’s be honest, in real-world test PHP can very often be faster then - less-than-mature-Rust codebase.
I was curious about Kbin until I read this comment.
I’m in both, but I’m a Reddit refugee looking for a similar experience. 99% of my Reddit’s time was through the RIF app and Jeroba looks and feels the same, so currently I only use lemmy.
I wouldn’t mind switching over to kbin if it gets better in the future since I can read everything from anywhere.
I tried Kbin and its way harder for me somehow searching other federated instanced content on Kbin than on lemmy.
It feels like for Kbin you need to go first to lets say Lemmy.world and then check the list and copy the names of each then search it.
on any lemmy instance i can simply search the things and find stuff of other instances way easier.
also Lemmy is like WAY bigger of user base posts and comments.
Idk i just heard of lemmy first
I liked both but ultimately joined Lemmy over kbin because it seems like there’s more interest in building mobile apps for Lemmy. (Currently using Jerboa) Also like that my Lemmy instance is based on renewable energy which is nice.
It was the first one I knew about and I haven’t had a reason to switch over. I already knew about lemmy long before all of the reddit drama happened, so that was where I went a few days before the blackout. I had never even heard of kbin until after I’d already been on lemmy for a while. Also, rust > php, and calling communities “magazines” is weird.
I’ll agree that calling communities “magazines” is weird.
The word reminds me of outdated (and overpriced) print periodicals or ammo holders. They may as well call them 8-tracks or cassettes. Maybe the word will evolve. “Sub” took on it’s own meaning after Reddit.
“Fetch” still isn’t happening, so we’ll see.
I think lemmy looks nicer visually. I’ll probably give kbin a try at some point.
Php
I prefer the UI of lemmy.world to Kbin, and it’s been smoother for me as well. But I’ve got an account at both. Still haven’t entirely made up my mind on which to make my “main”.
I’m in the very same boat, but I find myself using kbin more every day. BUT Sync for Lemmy is comming, so…
To be fair, Harriette is also making extremely quick work working on Kmoon, which looks amazing!
I first was on Lemmy, now on kbin. Kbin is just a much more nicer experience. Also it’s not developed by tankies who glorify f*cking Mao Zedong. Simple as that.
You were on lemmygrad?
I just looked a bit through the mastodon accounts of core developers.

The tankie thing keeps pushing me away from lemmy, but lemmy seems to be the only software getting clients at the moment. So I’m torn. I want an iOS client badly, but I don’t want to support tankies.
I suppose I shouldn’t sell out for a nice app though.

I wouldn’t call supporting china and russia mentally sane lol
Not like they get money from that, they do get money from donations, but I don‘t think just using an open source product is support.
I use like hundreds of open source things and idk the ideology of any of the devs and I don‘t care, they could turn out to be serial killers, I don‘t see my use of their product as an issue. Monetary support is the difference to me.
Maybe I got some messed up morals though, wouldn’t be the first time.
Social networks, even open source ones are only successful if lots of people use them. The more people who join and contribute to the community, the more other people will find things that interest them and then join. Any engagement with the network increases it’s reach and therefore influence. If that network is run by tankies I’d rather not add to its power.
Lemmy is not ran by tankies, even if it may be developed by one - if the lead devs go off the rails, someone can always fork it and continue development elsewhere; and if any instance goes off the rails it can be defederated (and this is already happening!)
Honestly the kbin site works quite well on mobile and you can install it as a PWA
I agree it works well, but it annoys me that there seems to be no way to collapse comment threads, and on iOS, once you press a menu, it’s impossible to hide it again.
Lemmy, on the other hand, is a shitshow on iOS.
Check out https://kbin.social/m/kbinStyles for userscripts to help with stuff like collapsing comments
Kbin just sounds cooler, dude.
I mean, lemmy - that’s just lame with extra steps. Eww. Yuck. Yucky. Not cool. Actual cringe, tbh. 🤢
Kbin. That’s like cool-beans, dude. Actually rad. And based. 😎
Who doesn’t want to be cool? I tell you, nerds, that’s who. Do you want to be a nerd? Didn’t think so.
Checkmate. Try proving me wrong (pro-tip: you can’t)Lemmy is one of the coolest musicians to ever live. There, I won the argument.
iirc Lemmy is God, so yeah
I like both. Currently on kbin because of the All bug on lemmy. My aim is to use both for a longer period.
Is that where the all section just constantly keeps loading more and more and more and you can’t even use it because it’s flying downwards?
