They usually correctly point to the USSR, Cuba, PRC, Vietnam, Laos, etc. as actual implementations of Socialism, but lie, exaggerate, and omit key details, and conflate Communism with (insert scary buzzword here). It’s a rational target (for their interests, at least) using irrational methods, something Michael Parenti illuminates on in Blackshirts and Reds.
They don’t give it nuance, they portray AES states as enemies of US Hegemony as Socialist, but affirm that that is bad. They lie about what they look like and what Socialism is, so that way they can tie Socialism to failure and to enemies of the US, furthering anti-Communist dogmatism.

This is way too nuanced to actually be what is taught in American public schools. I know it certainly wasn’t what I was taught.
