Robert F Kennedy Jr appears with Republican candidate, while congressman promotes state constitutional amendment to disqualify non-citizens from voting

At a Wisconsin rally on Friday, Donald Trump called Kamala Harris a “low-IQ person” and vowed to save the economy “from total obliteration” in a 1.5 hour-long meandering speech that touched on top campaign issues including the economy and foreign policy – but also featured threats to curb press freedoms and a lengthy discussion of his own rhetorical style.

On immigration, Trump’s message was characteristically dark. The campaign played a painful video of a mother describing her daughter’s murder and blaming Harris for allowing the accused to enter the US without authorization. Studies overwhelmingly refute Trump’s claim that immigrants are disproportionately responsible for crime in the US, but such claims are a feature of his campaign.

Can someone help with data refuting immigrants as source of crime? I’ve got a family member who believes this and I’m trying to come with an objective response.

Thank you for actually asking for citations. If something is fact, you should be able to prove it.

It should be common sense. If you’re here illegally, why would you commit crime that will certainly get you departed if caught? The consequences for undocumented immigrants for even minor crimes are so much higher than for citizens.

You can only really measure crimes that are both known and prosecuted. If you know something was stolen and you don’t know who did it, then you can’t say a certain group is responsible. You can also say that blacks and Latinos are disproportionately scrutinized. They’ll show up on crime statistics more than say rich white business owners.

I’m not sure I can offer any links but the information is absolutely out there. You should also look into rates of policing in different neighbourhoods and, since they care so much about corruption, point how much white-collar financial crime and stuff is done by white dudes.

But most importantly you gotta understand that they didn’t get there by following logic and it will be very difficult to use objectivity to pull them out an argument where being objective is not important to them.

Appreciate it, and the warning too. This family member and I had a long chat through the early morning hours recently. We had civil exchange of differing ideas and concerns, and both agreed we would pick our top three problems on our mind for the election and research them together over the weekend. I have to give it a shot.

Illegal immigration and crime is one of their big items, so trying to learn more.

Well they ended up going from trump to no-vote. Feels bitter sweet, but the upside is we still had very constructive conversations and I’m taking that as a win.

Hell yea! That’s something! Ultimately no one can be deprogrammed in a day and that’s a solid start. Most of these people have been driven by fear for so long that just getting them to admit Trump is also a danger is a big step out of the hole they’re in.

So happy you can have legitimate discussion with your family.

We have some dear friends coming over tonight who have been sucked into voting for Trump over immigration. I’m under orders from my wife that I am not to talk politics and ruin the night.

Sounds great and good on you, but they aren’t looking for any evidence. And if they were yours isn’t any they’ll believe.
