Following another setback in its legal dispute with Sony Music, Quad9 has decided to block pirate site Canna worldwide. The court-ordered block was initially restricted to Germany but the music label complained that VPNs and a mobile network still allowed Germans to access the pirate site. Quad9, meanwhile, has appealed the underlying court judgment.

Ultimately, Quad9 hopes that the lower court’s blocking order will be overturned on appeal. It will continue to fight the case, even if that takes several years.

This sets a really bad precedent going forward… a bit of a low blow for Sony to go after a non-profit that doesn’t have an army of lawyers

Good job Sony! You’ve really shown that greedy not-for-profit organization! Shame on them! /s

I checked with dig, both 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 resolve it, but Sony targets Quad9.

Of course, if they went head to head, both cloudflare and Google would have the resources to fight back while quad9 is just a non-profit.

They’re bought from the looks of it, this is sloppy.

Out of caution, recommend everyone to avoid Quad9 & “Canna.to” & “Pirated copies of Evanescence’s album” at least until the dust settles.

Of course they want easy wins at first, that way when they take on larger ‘suppliers’ they have court cases they’ve already won ‘backing them up’.

What do you expect Quad9 to do here? Their hand is being forced, they don’t have any options besides continuing to fight it in court unfortunately, which is what they’re doing.

Not blaming them, but at the same time, they are being forced to comply and my pirating ass is having no part of it.

Let me guess, will Quad9 start blocking even more websites preemptively?
