What followed was a wave of shooting and arson attacks across 11 Palestinian villages in which a dozen homes and more than 100 cars were torched, thousands of animals were slaughtered, four people were shot dead and scores of others were seriously wounded.

I want to add a word that I never see that needs to enter the mainstream lexicon:

      “Pogrom”.

Apparently, this isn’t a commonly known term, although it’s less obscure to Jews. A pogrom is a form of terrorism in which a population decides to get rid of or inflict their hatred on a marginalized ethnic group by routinely rolling through their towns or neighborhoods dolling out unrestrained violence. It is often accompanied by warnings and demands that the population relocate or face constantly escalating barbarism. It’s a form of persistent mass terrorism, usually sanctioned by the state.

Pogroms as a familiar concept emerged as a practice in Russia in the 19th and 20th century toward Jews, though they’re well known to have been used throughout history. Traditionally, Jews have been the historical target of pogroms for centuries, and it’s not a coincidence that Israeli Jews are using these tactics. These are familiar to them. They know exactly what they are doing. This is NOT independent acts of violence, this is a reenactment of atrocities faced by the grandparents and great grandparents of many Israelis Jews.

Pogroms are always horrific and depraved on their own. But the added context that these people are appropriating the weapons of extermination that they know well from the receiving end, it’s just… I don’t quite have the words to capture my horror.

These are pogroms. They are a relic of the medieval era and of the atrocities of the 1800s and early 1900s. They should stay in history, but they are being dusted off with deliberate intent by Itmar Ben-Gvir and the exterminationist wing of mainstream Israeli society.

These are not “Rising tensions” or “Settler violence”, they are POGROMS. We all need to say it.

Yes, to my knowledge this is how pogroms started, against Jewish people. Latter on, the term expanded to other (ethic, religious among others) minorities as well. And for so-so many decades, zionists have been doing pogroms against Palestinians.

Note: when adding a wiki link in a topic even remotely related to zionism, please keep in mind of the following:

Is this really such an obscure term in English? I definitely remember hearing it in school here in Austria, perhaps in the context of the November pogroms of 1938, but may have been from other contexts too; I don’t remember the details.

My frustration is that I think terms like “settler violence” misinform people:

          1. the violence isn’t coming from a handful of lone-wolf settlers. It’s state sanctioned.

          2. this isn’t just violence like a bar flight or soccer riot. It’s deliberate, methodical, ethnic cleansing. It is a purposeful atrocity.

We need to hold the whole Israeli government and a bunch of specific NGOs accountable for all of this.

I think we need to better educate people then. Because settler violence is state sponsored by definition. It is ethnic cleansing by definition. It is the exact same violence covered by rational sounding lies that we can see throughout the non European world from 1500 on. It is a very predictable cycle.

Create tension with unpunished crimes, theft, assault, murder, doesn’t matter.

Repeat until the indigenous population lashes out. It does not matter how minor. Even just a threat will do.

Raise a posse and “defend” yourselves against them.

Tell everyone they started it when they lashed out.

Repeat until they’re stuck on reservations under military control and you control the vast majority of the land.

Sunday also saw Noor Abu Rasheed return home from Ramallah Hospital, her legs bandaged, to the dilapidated tent her family now shares next to their burned home. Two weeks after the attacks, she was with her family in the remains of their home as they cleared out the last of the blackened furniture. “My hope is to return to school and finish my exams,” Noor said, looking down at the place on her leg where she was shot. Then she looked up, and smiled. “If I stay alive,” she said.

    Fuck. I can’t even imagine. :(

Yeah, I just finished reading and I don’t understand why the world is not acting. Why can Israel act with impunity. The Western nations have clearly shown that the rules are different for non-white people and that their lives are not as valuable. The hypocrisy is shameful. These are people with dreams and hopes just like us. The language used by the government, describing Palestinians as vermin and animals emboldens the settlers. There seem to be few repercussions for killing a Palestinian, if any. Israel keeps saying ups this was a mistake and ups we bulldozed entire villages and ups, a mass grave. They say they will investigate but when they do, they find no wrong doing or just a misdemeanour or an error. The whole situation is a clusterfuck, any other country would be sanctioned at the least, and ostracised. And why are the other Arab nations not helping Palestine more? I understand the situation is complicated, but there are many diplomatic measures to put pressure on Israel without getting involved in the fighting.

This is exactly what pisses me off about all of this… it’s 2024, we see live footage on various platforms, and the “leaders” make eurovision-like decisions all over the past few months.

It’s not 1945 where they used to make decisions based on hearsay, its 2024 ffs, with live footage.

They spread fakenews about beheaded babies without any proof and justified the killings. But the footage that clearly shows acts of crime isn’t remotely considered to stop this cruelty.

Arabs are in the pocket of the US, they would never sacrifice anything for this cause esp not US weapon supplies.

US too will have to face consequences for Israel’s actions as we are the necessary condition for these war crimes.

        There’s multiple reasons:

        • Zionists have made it a priority to make sure they have their people / sympathisers in high places in politics and media. Anyone who even hints at considering calling Palestinians people gets pushed out.
        • Israel is a laboratory for ‘policing’, anti-terrorism and surveillance tactics. This technology and know-how is indispensable for both the ‘democracies’ in the West and dictatorships, including Arab dictatorships that pay lip service to the Palestinian cause, but don’t actually do anything. If crowd control tactics work on Palestinians, they work on leftie protestors and civil rights movements in the West and popular democratic movements in authoritarian regimes.
        • people don’t want to be called anti-semites (especially in Europe, where every country has a horrific history with that), which is why they’ve been trying very hard to conflate Zionism with Jewishness.
        • there’s also a global right-wing nationalism on the rise, where people like Modi, Orban, Trump, Netanyahu, … sort of espouse the same rhetoric that used to be limited to white supremacy, but it’s just applied to their ethnicity/race/religious group. The neo-nazis are still anti-semites, but they see Israel as the place they can ship all the Jews to when the time comes. Israel’s actions making Jews outside of Israel a target for retaliation plays into that as well.

No third party got enough votes to do anything but Fuck up one campaign or or another, at least for a few decades that’s been true. Exactly what good does that do? Absolutely no one will get “the message” from your 4% of the population (I’m being pretty generous there. Don’t get your hopes up) protest votes. All you can do is help trump by doing that

The protest vote has failed to achieve anything since the always. Is it possible you don’t know that? Or is the goal specifically to help trump?

The president does not control the police nor campus police or campus administration. It would be a hell of a lot easier across the board if they did.

Can you prove that the Biden administration is behind the persecution of the protestors, specifically, and not individual police departments? Trump sounds like he would want to order the national guard or military to do this.

What is a pogrom? Israeli mob attack has put a century-old word in the spotlight - The Conversation - March 6, 2023

    From Russia to Israel

effectively puts Israel in the place of the Jews’ historic persecutors. This is a highly uncomfortable position for many Jewish people, particularly in Israel.

In today’s Israel, minority rights have been suppressed as well, particularly in the West Bank. Palestinians in the West Bank, unlike the Jewish settlers next to them, face violence and discrimination in nearly every aspect of their lives. In other words, Israeli Jews and Palestinians are today not equal partners in an ethnic rivalry.

historical records show far more rioters were arrested and punished by Russia in 1881 than in Huwara this week, where only eight of the 400 Jewish offenders were arrested, only to be quickly released.

With help from the US. Here is an article from November 2023:

There’s a Wave of Violence in the West Bank. New York Charities Are Helping Fund It.

Tax-deductible donations are arming Israeli settlers with combat gear, surveillance systems, and more.

“The ties between New York state and war crimes being carried out by Israeli settlers are egregious,” said Jay Saper, a New York–based organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace. “It’s long overdue for the state to take action.”

Earlier this year, Jewish Voice for Peace and other anti-occupation groups launched a campaign to stem the flow of tax-exempt donations from New York organizations to West Bank settlements. The “Not on Our Dime” act, introduced in the state Legislature in May, grew out of the activist effort and sought to empower the state attorney general to revoke the nonprofit status of groups funding settlements. Dozens of state legislators almost immediately condemned it as “a ploy to demonize Jewish charities.”

These groups are like the Israeli Hamas - religious fundamentalists who just want violence. The only thing that separates them in my mind is the lack of political power and billions in funding. Unfortunately, they are gradually increasing in both power and funding under the likes of Smotrich and Ben-Gvir.

Pogroms existed before Hamas. And may have also been the reason hamas was founded. Also any sources on billions of funding hamas has? These settlers are backed by a state who is allied with the biggest military power in the world. They do in fact have billions in funding. Russia arrests more people than israel ever does for its settlers. That’s how bad it is. And even when they are arrested they get to go out immediately.

Israeli state itself is like hamas
