  • I’d say its similar to lemmy, but with features people have asked for like a way to combine the feeds of similar communities and more moderation options.

The easiest way I can explain it though is to encourage people to just check it out. It’s not as mature in some places, but has lots of features you didn’t realise you were missing until you tried them :)

It used activitypub, the same as lemmy, so you can find and interact with all the communities you do on lemmy too.

  • Hey, all good questions.

Different hardware, piefed.zip is running on a cloud vps. Still with hetzner so the admin team can access & troubleshoot.

Donations wise, if piefed takes off we’ll probably go down a joint .zip dono route, rather than distinctly donating to each individual server. If nothing else, its easier to manage one dono page/setup than multiple. In the meantime I’ll fund at least month 1 until I’m happy either way. Lemmy.zip is still my baby and won’t be going anywhere. But yes I’ll do some comms around that when I’m happy with a solution.

Piefed offers more in terms of moderation and enables a wider “staff” team, which is a level that lemmy is missing, I.e. an instance moderator. We’ve already started to leverage that, so that the moderation isn’t just on the admin team, rather trusted community members can help out. Happy for anyone to reach out if they’re planning on switching to piefed and want to help out.

  • Hey, so better is more of an objective term - piefed offers a more comprehensive moderation experience for admins and mods, and addresses some of the issues that users raise around multiple communities and account settings etc.

Piefed runs on activitypub just like lemmy does, so are compatible with eachother - you probably already see piefed users and communities in your lemmy feed.

I wouldn’t say there is an argument either way from a user perspective- I’d encourage people to try both and see what they like.

There are no front ends yet that work with piefed (like tesseract or photon) but they’re being worked on. There’s also only a few apps, but similarly these are being worked on too, so before long you can probably interact with either software through an app.

Lemmy was the first and so is the most popular, and I hope the devs are able to bring some of the moderation features over to lemmy too, as it is quite a limited experience in comparison to many fediverse softwares.

Hope that helps, but tldr try both and see which one you like, they can interact with eachother anyway, I.e. https://piefed.zip/c/home can be interacted with via https://lemmy.zip/c/home@piefed.zip

  • Lemm.ee didn’t shut down because it was financially unsustainable though. It shut down because the admin team didn’t want to do it anymore.

Plenty of people have offered to take lemm.ee on and AFAIK nothing has progressed, but handled in a different way there could have been continuity and no need for users to transition away.

Given that the issue wasn’t one of finance and rather one of effort/will, how does charging for access change anything? The owner could decide they have had enough, walk away, and shut everything down anyway, no?
