Beyond it not actually mattering what others think, and as others have said - the chance of anyone even noticing being miniscule, if someone looking at you really assumes that only women can use “women’s” hygiene products, then they probably also assume you’re buying it for a woman in your life and couldn’t care less…

Doubt anyone would remember 5-10 minutes later that you were even there. When I worked retail, I had forgotten the previous customer by the time I was dealing with another.

        • Here in California, its normal for guys to get hygiene products for wives, partners, sisters, etc. Though in the cities no one cares who wears what either.

I’d assume in other states it’s normal for guys to do the household shopping. Maybe not in Texas or Florida.

trans man here, I also prefer to smell like raspberries or coconuts over uh “sports”, “extreme” or “blue”. Though sometimes you get a nice smelling product in the men’s section, like strong citrus or foresty, those are good

I used to gravitate towards more woodsy or foresty scents myself. Looking back, I think it was because that was the closest I could get to floral without being too “girly”.

As a cis dude: Yeah women’s deodorant is quite nice to wear

A lot of men’s deodorants (when they do say what they smell like) are shit like leather, bourbon, smoke, tobacco, engine bay, etc. And our shampoo selection ain’t much better.

Another cishetman here, and I even like outdoorsy shit and the smell of grass and lumber and all that.

But hell yes I would rather smell like vanilla or candy than whatever the fuck men are supposed to smell like. The deodorant I’m using now is supposed to be a lemon cookie scent, but it smells just like froot loops or fruity pebbles cereal. It kicks ass.

For soaps I really don’t care about the scent. But for something that’s going to stick with me like deodorant or beard balm/oil, it needs to either smell pleasant, be unscented, or have the weakest damn fragrance possible. Most products I’ve tried on my beard have been actively offensive to me, to where I give the entire thing away or chuck it. The stuff I use now is supposed to smell like booze, but it is so weak I never notice it except when actively applying it to my face.

Yeah, this would probably be better with a bit of a wording change (like “how deodorant is sold to women/how deodorant is sold to men”).

I mean, there’s definitely a real phenomenon at play here, but I think it has more to do with how the system indoctrinates us than any real, actual preferences.

Yeah, I prefer the more “feminine” smells from Old Spice. I’ve never been a fan of pungent chemical almost cologne smells in general. I really love that they did that because things aren’t that black and white. I’d try a scent and almost gag from it.

I have the opposite. I dislike the excessive fruity smells of feminine deodorant. Plus, I don’t nearly sweat as much as man and so I only need a little bit of men’s deodorant. That can lasts for ages!

Just going off of the point bigbananadealer@lemm.ee made.

I’m going to be honest I don’t care what the scent is when you’re in a relationship you grow fond of that. I had a girlfriend that smelled like cologne probably because she smoked and was still 17. I grew fond of that smell despite not caring for it much initially.

It kinda just doesn’t matter what other people think because if they care and spend enough time with you they’ll probably start missing it when you’re gone.

At least “womanly” scents are descriptive, so you know more or less what you’re getting, if I want to try out some “manly” scents (they get stronger more effective antiperspirant and I don’t mind what “gender” I smell of), I’d have to order all of them (am housebound, can’t just go around a drugstore, sniffing) just to see what iceberg, shark, and attack helicopter actually smell of lol… It’s easier to just smell of orchids… 😂

Can confirm, can get just about anything unscented in Japan. Thankfully likely due to the general societal norm of not having a strong smell wafting about oneself. Though not all abide, most do.

People might prefer scented deodorants because they enjoy the fragrance, while others might associate unscented ones with not being as effective at masking the smell of sweat or odor. It’s just a matter of personal preference, and to be fair some people don’t understand that others may have sensitive skin and need unscented products to help keep fresh with out irritating their skin.

This thread is throwing me for a loop. Here in Belgium most deodorant I’ve interacted with is either unscented or at worst lightly scented (I just checked, mine is not marketed as scented but has “perfume” in the ingredient list and smells only slightly).

Axe body spray is a thing for lazy men who don’t want to bother with a separate perfume and have a distinct lack in taste, but it’s not the norm for anyone over the age of 16.

Maybe try to buy in bulk online, I’m sure unscented antiperspirant exist if only due to allergies.

        What the actual fuck?

I am 48 and don’t know a single man who wears perfume daily. For me a fragrance is reserved for special occasions, like weddings or dates and to wear it to work would be considered quite unprofessional (like dressing up above your boss). But I guess we must all be lazy and lacking your refined taste… yeah

It might be a cultural thing then, but here that’s definitely how it is. Men either don’t wear perfume at all or they have a separate cologne or whatever. Putting both on is my norm.

I just checked on amazon.com.be, all the top results for “déodorant homme” are marketed as "clear, “clean” or “refreshing”. The 10th result is the first one that has “long lasting fragrance” as part of its marketing. Axe only makes it to #13 with a chocolate scent.

I doubt it. I live in Belgium too.

I do agree with you that Axe is vile, and I use a lightly scented deodorant of a different brand myself … but this notion that wearing an actual perfume every day is the norm for adult men is frankly ridiculous.

Ah no, I agree that many adult (men) don’t wear perfume every day. But a unscented/lightly scented deodorant is not at all the same as a “deodorant+perfume” combo which Axe sells and the other commenters seemed to be talking about.

I mentioned their Wilderness with Lavender scent in another comment. It literally just smells like lavender, and that’s a good thing.

I remember seeing that in the store before my egg cracked, and it had a sticker that said “Smells like manly lavender smells”. I smelled it to find out what “manly lavender” smells like, and I quickly realized (1) it just smells like lavender, and (2) I really wanted to smell like lavender.

It’s funny looking back now, but the fact that it took a marketing campaign to tell me it was OK to like the scent of flowers…

I feel like Deodorants and Perfumes for men aren’t as much of a choice as it is chosen for us. There’s like two main smells, “Old Sweat” and “Motor Oil”. Anything other than that is just variations of “Drain Cleaner Citrus”.

Like clothes for men, the selection feels so limited.
