Bandai Executives), Joyce’s quote from Disco Elysium, etc. But I had the chance to see the preview movie in theatres and this show has got to be my most anticipated anime of the year so far.
Watching mobile suit '79, Z, and Char’s comet before this made it extra spicy and interesting 👍 (my first was Gwitch)
I didnt get bored, usually watching new stuff does that to me because I’m not invested in it yet.
I thought the animation style was cool, I like the more cartoony vibe idk. I hate when everything looks too gritty dark or saturated with realism 😭
I’m interpreting strong yuri vibes thus far, which is a good sign. Lesbians and mechs are almost always a winning combo.

I was hyped for the first episode but then I remembered I saw this one in theaters earlier this year and enjoyed it. I’ll be honest I went in not having seen much of UC besides The Origin about 5 years ago, so I know who Char is but not the whole lore. I love the direction and choice of cinematography. I knew Anno and the creator of my favorite anime FLCL would cook with this one. Also the ED is great.
If you can, watch the compilation movies of the OG 0079 Gundam series, which will fill out the rest of the lore for this show, and are bangers in their own right. They’re up on Netflix and are also pretty easy to find by other means

The preview movie was fantastic. I’m wondering if they’re going to use any of the backstory animation from the movie, or if they are going to leave that as a purely movie thing. I’m excited to see what people think about Nyaan, cause the takeaway both my wife and I had was that

Backstory got moved to ep 2 of the broadcast it looks like, personally I prefer the movie version but I understand the changes for broadcast

Idk why but Pink hair protag being so headstrong and confidently throwing themselves into things and then not knowing what to do when they get there kinda turns me off. Lot of Deus Ex Haro right off the bat for someone so brash.

Lol. Word. I also don’t have a huge amount of nostalgia either since my early gundam exposure was Wing and SEED. I’ll keep watching for a bit though. I do need to check out the compilation movies still…
I like the “alternate UC” setting they’re playing with - it worked well for Gundam X (seriously any UC fan needs to watch Gundam X… and all anime fans need to watch the best anime of all time, Turn A Gundam), so I’m hopeful it could work well here.
Challia Bull showing up in this was spoiled for me, but I was fortunate enough to avoid seeing what he looked like. Definitely not what I was expecting lol.

I started an Andor rewatch in anticipation of season 2 and couldn’t help but draw that comparison lol
One of those hits definitely wasn’t a killshot, the other I’m not sure. The first one it shows the cop after the hit and then his cockpit goes dark, the second one was a headshot which generally isn’t a killshot on a mobile suit.
I know it’s a direct reference to Denim and Gene, but I think I’m just more hyped for Andor season 2 at this point lol.

Visually this looks pretty good, but man was the episode just a tiny sliver of every single thing I wish they stayed away from all in a row. Could still turn out great though, fingers crossed.
What were the things you disliked, if you don’t mind me asking?
I’m sure I’m forgetting some, but here’s a list
- I don’t like when the mechs have little drones
- I don’t like when they control the mecha with their minds, they should be flipping switches and shit
- I don’t like duels, I get their utility to the story, but the mechs should be getting more indiscriminately destructive as they get more powerful and dueling just doesn’t work with that
- They shouldn’t get too close to the original UC story, even in an alternate universe, there is just too much meaning loaded into characters like Char for them to fit in a new story
- The mecha don’t feel big enough, one of them falling should destroy more stuff around it
- Newtype stuff should be more in the background
- It seems like a pretty space-based story, and mecha battles on land are just better
Ah ok, I asked because I was worried I had overlooked something problematic but these seem to be (totally fair) personal preferences- only thing I’ll say is that this show is a “What if” scenario of the original UC, that is actually going to lean on and do some interesting things with stuff like Char’s characterization so definitely give next week’s ep a shot
