Pic related. When I was a kid I was walking with my mom along the road just down the street by a treeline and tied to one of the trees by it’s neck was a baby doll.

Very unnerving.

We never found who did it or why.

Years later I was out with my mom again in another part of the woods and she swore she saw something that looked humanoid and albino, like all white. It scared her enough that she wanted to leave right then.

Still think about both of these from time to time.

I was playing tag or something in the woods behind my neighborhood at night. Someone flashed a huge spotlight on us, started yelling they were the cops and they were going to set a dog on us. We figured it was some hoa-brained neighbor and left because we didn’t want trouble. Nope. It was a cop. Fucker rolled up on us and told a bunch of children if he caught us playing outdoors at night again he’d set an attack dog on us.

Upper middile income white neighborhood. White kids. Even with white privilege you’re never really safe. The monster was going to set a fucking dog on us for playing outside.

Down near my family’s old farm in Puerto Rico, there’s a pretty deep thicket of bamboo

Back when I was eleven, I was staring into the thicket because It was the style at the time

I remember my dad walked up and asked me what I was doing and i said “I think I saw something moving around in there” and he just flatly says “Don’t let them see you’re looking” and walks away

He meant there were probably some people fuckin in there, but my brain at the time convinced me there was some horror that my family knew about and kept as some sort of terrible family secret

Like at some point, my dad would be like “Now son, it’s time I told you about El Cucuy and how he lives on our farm” or something

I don’t think I ever experienced such existential horror up until that point or ever since

      El Cucuy

Really like how Latin American folklore is either cute creatures that defend the forest and nature, or evil demons that will kill you and devour your family. And sometimes the evil ones might do something good to you.

Probably foxes or a fox and something else in a fight did it, but just coming across a rabbit ripped up and apart about a clearing on an otherwise bright and sunny day was weird. Didn’t seem to have eaten much of it, just left stewn all over. Relatively fresh. Turkey vultures found it by the time I was heading back that way so it was mostly cleaned up.

Other one was when I was camping in a state park with friends. We took mushrooms and two of us went to get more firewood from a guy selling it in his yard down the road. Part of the road ran along a rocky ledge, ~10ft higher than the road, and there was a car with its hazards on and nobody around when we called as we approached, and then as we get closer we see there’s just a deer embedded in the roof of the car, like it jumped off the ledge and just landed on the car. No resolution to that one, was still there on the way back and gone by morning.

The deer was lodged into the roof or standing on the roof?

I hope I have some good ones.

On a run once I found a bunch of wooden sculptures of animals covering half a mile of trail. It wasn’t too far out of town but it was kind of a foggy fall day so it was spooky.

On another run I came upon an electric corridor. There was a camper in it with smashed in windows and blood stains around the windows.

I met a hermit once when I was hunting as a kid. We were in an unincorporated area with about sixty residents so it was genuinely the middle of nowhere. I got lost in the woods and so I just went straight in one direction until I hit a road. Ran into the hermit on the road and he told me not to shoot his cats. He had no cats.

The scariest was one night I was going camping on a trail I had been on dozens of times. I found a good spot to go off trail and set up and a little ways in I found a plywood shack just filled with garbage that had writing all over the walls.

The trail out behind my parents house wasn’t really /x/ material but the mixture of fields, woods, and raised levees meant that you could see just about everything from some spots. It’s really eerie looking out into a clear winter night and seeing the bobbing of flashlights a mile away, only for them to turn off all at once. I liked to take late night walks out there when I was a kid, preferring to do away with a flashlight to enjoy the glow of the moon. One night a group of men in a pair of trucks drove up the old dirt road by the trail where they got out and talked or argued with each other. I couldn’t make out what they were saying but I remember them leaving very quickly. I think they might have seen me and bolted. I ran home after they left. Didn’t like that one bit.

    Animal Death

Not that long ago on a crisp November evening I found a neat little pile of guts (with a heart stacked on top) next to another neat little pile of guts (without a heart stacked on top). It took a minute to register what I was even looking at, then I freaked out a little, then I remembered it was deer season and someone must have done a field dressing. You’re not supposed to hunt in that place so it was kinda neat to see evidence of poaching.

On my night jogs I used to go on I’ve heard kids chanting off in the woods and of course the occasional dog charging me straight out of the darkness. Oh, and the more severe horror of stalkers in shitty vans.

I’ve had some close encounters with a moose, a mountain lion, and a lot of bears but they’re not really “unnerving”. The scariest thing to find in the middle of nowhere is definitely signs of human activity when you think you’re all alone. Crude shelters, weird little effigies, anything that makes me feel like I’m trespassing into someone’s space. Makes me very paranoid about if I’m being observed and how well they’re going to take it

Used to find weird wooden sculptures like some shit out of Blaire Witch in the woods around my dad’s house where I spent a lot of time roaming around as a kid.

One time also saw a Great Horned owl sitting up in a gnarled old oak tree at night and it just sat there staring at my friend and I ominously, not moving not hooting like you usually expect an owl to or flying off like a startled animal typically would. Also those things are fucking HUGE, it was one of the most unnerving things I ever experienced out there.

I grew up deep in the mountains so the woods typically don’t scare me even at night even without lights, in fact hiking at night I prefer a no lights policy with my cousins as we know the area extremely well but that owl sticks with me.
