Unfortunately I’ve heard that a lot of people especially from academia are moving to bluesky. I’ve already started talking to some people I know about Mastodon. I hope the word spreads around.
What’s so special about bluesky that people are migrating there?
Old CEO of Twitter is involved.
Usually when something turns to shit, and the original CEO leaves to create a similar product, people follow. With games, software, even hardware.
BS is run by an independent team, and Jack recently deleted his BS account. He’s promoting Nostr.
The invite only is helping build the science Community create their circles without misinformation being pushed or shouted at them.
Currently BS also has one server, so it’s easier for most people to use it unlike mastodon instances. The custom feeds also help with community building.
Can’t help but read the "BS"s as bullshit. The meaning didn’t change much.
Could just make a science mastodon if they wanted

yea I don’t see how this wouldn’t be possible with Mastodon
Oh yes, this reason makes sense.
The big thing is that it is invite only. Also, I find it easier to use than mastodon.
Another point, I need more shitpost in my feed. I fucked up with my mastodon feed and have too much political crap on there. I ended up saving a good amount of invites and invite only to small group people I like and want to keep touch with (no rando). So, I ended up with a small cohort of people over there that I can share thoughts and photos with.
Is there much in mastodon at all other than political stuff? When I first joined I went to the “posts” tab and it was all political stuff. I don’t know what populates in that tab, I’m assuming it’s popular posts, but it’s almost all I’ve seen on there.
A good way to find stuff is to follow hashtags you are interested in. You start seeing people who post stuff you like and follow them as well. Want art? Follow #mastoart. Want stuff about programming? Follow #programming. Then you start seeing artists and programmers and you can follow them to see their other posts. They boost something and oh that is interesting to so you follow that person too. You kinda gotta get the ball rolling by just following stuff.
There is not really an algorithm on masto which is simultaneously its greatest weakness and strength, just people boosting stuff, just people tagging stuff. It takes a little more work to find stuff but the benefit is no one can game the algorithm. Things spread organically.
My feed is full of weather, and I ♥️ it.
Ooh, this might convince my wife to join. She loves watching Ryan Hall.
Well there’s everything. I’m on Mastodon.art so my local feed is populated by art. I sub to a few game developers, writers and scientists as well
I guess different people have different use cases. I am enjoying Mastodon and have had positive interactions with people. I have also found a lot of good quality content there. Additionally, I totally avoid political stuff so haven’t had any issues of political stuff messing up my feed. IMO the invite only thing is just increasing attractiveness by creating artificial scarcity.
I think some people are also scared off by the spread-out, volunteer nature of things.
We’re betting at least some people (and we only need a small number; we’re not greedy) will feel more comfortable with a paid service with an actual company (not launched yet). Won’t ever be a large portion of Fediverse users, but I think a broad diversity of options will be what will ensure the Fediverse “wins” in the long run.
Really, variety of options and potential interlinkage with other kinds of Fediverse projects is what really excites me about the Fediverse.
I think the invites feature is the only things bluesky really has. At this point, I don’t mind as much as the feature allowed me to control who is in my feed and made my feed more intimate like the early days of Facebook. For me, it was a way to weirdly combat parasocial relationships by inviting people I know and talk to.
Theoretically. I can do the same for mastodon. But once I start trying to explain fediverse, they didn’t care for it. Fediverse idea is interesting, but loses most people I want to keep in touch with.
One of the things I really like about Mastodon is that I can curate my feed to show only what I am interested in by following hashtags and/or people and muting those people whose posts I don’t want to see. There’s no hidden algorithm controlling my feed, pushing controversial posts towards me and other stuff. So I don’t get why would you need the invite only feature of bluesky control your feed?
Because it is harder to get people I know on board to mastodon than to bluesky. I don’t want too many random people on my feed. Most of my feed consists of people I do know and actually interact with. Mastodon doesn’t have as much shitposting as I would like and takes awhile for it to get situated to the point I ended not using it. Why bother going to mastodon when I have my friends on bluesky.
OK understood why you prefer bluesky.
What I hear a lot is
- they are following other people there
- they don’t know how to use Mastodon and prefer Bluesky
- people on Mastodon keep telling them that they aren’t using it correctly
- reply guys on Mastodon who think they know everything better than the scientists
Guess that proves education can’t teach you common sense.
Bluesky is still invite only, so eh, doesn’t really matter.
Maybe that’s the whole point: People love to show off about being part of some super exclusive group
It is certainly that, but also that bluesky feels like home to twitter users. They do the best job of running a twitter clone that feels seamless to join and use. My SO is not techy whatsoever, maybe even what you’d call a “normie” and they are thrilled to be on bluesky having been an avid twitter user. Mastodon unfortunately just doesn’t cater to the same or widest audience.
Really?
Because I can’t agree. Bluesky is, weirdly, geared around building up custom “queues”, and the default queue, called “Discover” has some really niche stuff in it. This is very much so not like the usual Twitter method, and is way less immediate for generating a dashboard with valuable content than Twitter’s “Just follow a bunch, the algorithm with add in the gaps”.
Like right now the third post ok Discover is a Bara Furry artist essentially advertising his porn.
Bara Furry Porn. The OPPOSITE of mainstream.
I find the app very off putting every time I open it.
That’s fair. They haven’t been on long but it seems to be the preferred alternative for whatever reason. Also, try searching for “BBC” on mastodon. You will find the news… among other things.
So a fun idea might be to set up or join an invite-only Mastodon server, and spin it as the Cool Place To Be™? It sounds silly, but hey, if that’s part of what’s working for another social space…lol
It could work. Just add a normie approved UI and create a flair of exclusivity.
Which was also how that voice only social media gained traction, I swear Clubhouse couldn’t make it clearer their whole point was creating the appearance of a super exclusive club.
Over time everything gets eaten up by open systems. If you are worried about lemmy or mastodon, don’t be. Other open systems are the real concern. I’m rooting for nostr.
The instance I’m on got updated to 4.2 yesterday, but the new search still isn’t working for me.
Usually, I’d have thought this was because it needed to take time to index all the posts, but people on other servers are saying that the search is working for them. 🤔
Search only works if your instance runs a search engine installation. Typically this is done by the admin installing ElasticSearch:
Ah, I see. I’ll have to ask my admin whether it’s going to be added or not.
And Lemmy… stays the same
Looks like a decent workflow update, still going to be confusing for brand new folks I bet
just in time for X to require paying to post
Any improvements to the moderator tools?
This is the best summary I could come up with:
Mastodon, the federated microblogging platform, has been updated to version 4.2, which comes with massive improvements to search and the web interface, particularly for logged-out and first-time users.
One of Mastodon’s many charming qualities is that, unlike Twitter X, Bluesky, Instagram, and most other social media platforms, the user base is split across thousands of instances, each of which can decide to federate with or block any of the others.
If you’re logged in to Twitter X, for example, you can click on a link to a tweet post, and you’ll be able to retweet it, reply, star it, whatever.
In order to engage, you had to copy the URL, go back to your instance, paste it into the search box, and then do whatever you were going to do (assuming you remember).
If you haven’t tried Mastodon yet — or you tried it and bounced off — you may be interested to know that 4.2 also improves the sign-up process in the web interface.
One last note: the search and web interface improvements only show up on servers that have installed version 4.2.
The original article contains 645 words, the summary contains 184 words. Saved 71%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
So, can Mastodon 4.2 full-text search now see Lemmy posts and replies, even without hashtags? You can follow Lemmy communities and accounts from a Mdon account, that way the info is in the Mdon instance databases, but as the new search is “opt-in” only, do Lemmy communities or users have to set some flag to agree that our posts and replies are searchable ? This might help discoverability of Lemmy.

That makes sense considering that before this update, posts weren’t searchable so you could only find user profiles, hashtags, and your own (& favorited?) posts. It was basically just a hashtag and user search before.

Mastodon is ass. Instead of having social media corporations deciding what you can say, it’s some random neckbeard who threw together a server. And your account does not transfer if the admin decides he doesn’t like you. Hissy fits over defederation are already tearing apart a lot of good instances. Half of mastodon is just circlejerking about how much better it is than twitter anyways.
Swap mastodon for lemmy and Twitter for reddit and it’s the same comment.
Then stand up your own server and govern it as you please.
I don’t want to run servers to participate in social media.
This is exactly how Lemmy works, yet you’re here…
My tip would be to try finding German instances. Generally, Germans do this fediverse stuff right, they use it for everyday chill stuff in contrast to Americans who just want to discuss politics and gender all day long.
Any social media that involves followers is fucked or can get fucked.
