Both retailers were founded in Portland, and had local ownership, but that was long ago.
The stores are shells of familiar brands that siphon away local dollars. Only remaining local connections are the employees and regionally produced products.

It feels kinda hollow supporting the strike at Fred Meyers by shopping at Winco (which isn’t organized at all in Oregon AFAIK) or Target (ditto, and also notoriously treats their people like dirt)
I would imagine that any destabilization in the operations of a capitalist system benefits the worker. Sure, Winco makes more money today, giving them a false impression of scale. And after FM falls in line, we go after Winco, giving them an even more pronounced loss of capital. Even if nothing happens, you’ve still added volatility to the system. That’s better than nothing.
